The power of the Book of Mormon

Hola Familia!

Wow, the time goes by fast on the mish! I pretty much spent the whole week up on the mountain working. We have been finding a lot of people to teach so that has been great. Other than that, not too much has happened.

Saturday night I was told that I needed to help change some of the bad habits of the ward, and that I needed to give a 15 minute talk on punctuality. After looking in the scriptures, I pretty muched changed my talk to keeping the sabbath day holy, and told them that the Lord has asked us to worship Him on this day. When we arrive late we miss the most important thing, the sacrament. It went well, and after searching through a thousand Ensigns I even found a story that I could share haha. Let's hope they listened to me and next week they are all there before the sacrament!

Also, Elder Perry and I had a pretty cool experience with the Book of Mormon. I am starting the new missionary revolution here in Guatemala, instead of carry around a huge back pack, all Elder Perry and I have done is carry around a Bible, which has our book of pictures in it, a white board that I made that can fold, and then the pamphlets that we pass out. Then, the other missionary carries his Book of Mormon, plus another one to give out! That way people know exactly what we are here for, and when they see the Book of Mormons that we are holding, they will ask us questions about it, and then that's the best way to start teaching.

But anyways, we were coming home late one night, and these dogs from another church started chasing after us like they always do. So Elder Perry decided to point his Book of Mormon at them. When he did that, the dogs got scared and ran away and started whimpering. Haha,It was sooooo cool. So as we were getting closer to our house we passed by another church as they were playing this loud music, and they were screaming and yelling. So I pointed my Book of Mormon at the church, and right when I did that, the lights shut off in the church, the band quit playing their music, and the people were silent.

All I have to say is that the Book of Mormon has power! I'm not surprised at all, because the book is perfect, and it can bring a man closer to God. When we read the Book of Mormon we gain light and power. It contains powerful words, and when we read it, we gain a knowledge, and a testimony that God really does exist, and the more knowledge and faith we gain, the more light and power we have!

An amazing week!

Hola Familia!

This week has been a great week! I don't even know where to start. First of all, they split our zone into 2 zones, and so now we have new zone leaders. They are awesome! I also got called to be a district leader. Because the zones are so small, I'm over 2 other companionships, but wow, my district is the best! I love serving and being positive with them. The only bad part is having to stay up so late talking with the zone leaders every night, but oh well!!

We had an amazing week in the work! After many hard weeks of searching for God's childeren who have been prepared by Him, I think we finally found some. We ended up bringing 5 investigators to church, which I have never done before. And with the positive experience that they had, I wouldn't be surprised if it doubled the next week!

This is how we did it. We got our ward mission leader, to take his truck up the mountain and we just piled everyone in. We even brought like 10 inactive members in this big pile of people in the back of the truck!

Then after church, as we were waiting for our ward mission leader to take them all back, 2 of the investigators, Roni age 13, and Walter, his brother, age 11 asked the best question I've ever heard in the mission......So Elder Corbett, when can we be baptized?!?! It was the coolest thing! I pulled out my phone and checked the calender and I was like well, you have to go to church 2 more times, so let's plan it on the 1st of March! haha! These 2 boys will really help the ward. One problem that this ward has, is that there is no one with the priesthood, not even to pass the sacrament. These 2 boys will be able to pass the sacrament!!!

One thing that i have learned in the mission, is that there are going to be good days and bad days, good weeks and bad weeks, even months. But if we are patient with the Lord, and if we are humble before Him, He will comfort us during these bad times, and bless us with great times and experiences on our missions. I am so greatful for the joy and knowledge I have gained about the Savior's love that He has for me and His children here in Guatemala. There's no where I could be, that is better for me, than right here serving the Lord.

Hola Familia!

This has been a great week, not only because Seattle won the super bowl, but because we have been having a lot of fun with our investigators! Also, I got to go on divisions with one of the zone leaders.

I love doing divisions, because there is always something I can learn, especially with one of the zone leaders! I went with Elder Garcia, and to his area called Brasilia! It was nice taking a break from Las Rosas and experiencing another area! I definitely learned a lot from him. Especially, to just talk to everyone one and ask them if they want to hear a message! I decided to put my own spin on it. I did like the part where we talk with everyone, but the thing that I found out here in Guatemala, is that everyone likes food! So now when we are talking to them we tell them that we know how to cook many different dishes from the United States, and that we would like to come over and get to know their family, cook for them, and then share a little message with them!

After doing that, more people have been accepting of us. We have gotten to know them and be friends with them. We have been teaching more lessons, and It has been FUN!!! Well that's all that happened this week here in Guatemala! It sounds like everyone but Landon had a good week this week! Les Amo Mucho!

We made hamburgers and then we talked about how you would rather have a hamburger with every topping on it, instead of a hamburger with only meat on it. Then we related that to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints compared to all the other churches, and how it's the only church that has all the toppings!

Hola Famila!

Wow, I can't believe how fast the weeks are going by! It feels like every week goes by faster and faster and as Elder Perry and I get dedicated to the work, it goes even faster!

This week has been a very good one! We got permission from the Dad of one of our investigators, to baptise her, so now we are planning the baptism. It should happen either this week or the next.

Another great thing that happened, is that Elder Cook had a satellite conference with all the ward councils. Everyone in our ward is pretty much a part of the ward council, so they all went. He really got them excited to do missionary work which is really good for us! Apparently, if we can get 18 more priesthood holders in the ward, they will build a church in our area, making it so more people will come.

Something really cool that we did this week, is that we gathered all the people in the ward into one room. We then passed out 3 colors of cards, white, red and green. Then we had them put their names on the white, a name of a inactive member on the green, and an investigator that they know on the red. Everyone was so willing to do it and now we have like 30 references for investigators to go contact with the members and 30 inactive members that we can visit! I'm really hoping that by doing this we can help out the ward.

Well, that's all I have for this week ......... and go Seahawks!!!! But actually, I don't really care, after 6 months of living in Guatemala I forgot how to play football, now it's all about soccer for another year and half!!! Les amo!

A visit from Elder Cook and a trip to the Zaculeu ruins

Hola Familia!

This week was a great week! Not only have Elder Perry and I been working and finding success in our area, but we got the opportunity to listen to Elder Cook and his wife, and Elder Duncan of the seventy and his wife. Also, we made a trip to some ancient mayan ruins, and watched people sacrifice random things in a fire.

So Saturday morning, we faced the cold and woke up at 4:00 in the morning to get ready to make it down to Xela! It was super neat, because it was the first time we got to meet every single missionary from the mission! The best part of this, was being able to listen to Elder Cook and Elder Duncan and shake their hands! Of course, their wives did amazing, and of course Sister Cook´s talk was about church hymns. But, I can't even explain how strong the spirit was to see and hear one of God´s 12 witnesses! Both Elder Duncan and Elder Cook explained many ways to improve our work. The best was Elder Cook´s way, to find the people who are already ready for the gospel! haha! The most amazing part came at the end, when he gave the mission a blessing and bore his testimony. He said, I am a witness of Jesus Christ, and I know His voice. After he said that, the room was silent, and you could tell that everyone was feeling the spirit so strong!!!

After that we had the opportunity to take our family generation photo (which is the largest generation in the mish of 5 generations). Also, the gang from the CCM met up and we got another photo with them. It was great to see everyone and I can't believe how many missionaries there are in this mission!

Also For p-day we were able to finally go to Zaculeu, a mayan ruin. After seeing pictures from the previous missionaries who went, I was shocked to see how big these ruins are! They are gigantic! I think it's crazy to actually be where the lamanites were and to see actual people sacrificing different things as the lamanites would do.

They even had the stadium or arena where they would play juego de pelota. Which was cool to see, because I remember watching a re-inactment of ancient mayans playing this game in a history class, so It was amazing to be a witness of it! Well enough of explaining it, I think photos will help better!

All is well. I'm so grateful for this opportunity to serve the Lord. I know that this will be one of the most important things I can do to show my love for Him, and to bring other people unto Him to feel this love! I hope all is well for you guys.

Six months!

Hola Familia!!

This week has been a super good and super fast week. Last week, I completed 6 months in the mish!! I can't believe how fast the time is going by, and before I know it, I will be at 1 year.

During this week, Elder Perry and I have done A TON of cooking and I would just have to say with all the grease everywhere, that we cook like Americans! We made HUGE hamburgers, we even tried frying hot dogs haha! I even tried making a batter to make corn dogs with the hot dogs!

When we weren't cooking, we were out working, and we have been improving our work. Even though everyone already goes to a church, we have gotten really good at getting in the door. Now we just need to get them to come to our church with us! One thing I have found out, is to use the members. Instead of waking up at 5:30 a.m. and climbing a mountain to get to church, why not just go find a member who can be friends with them and they can help us get them to church! Maybe that sounds a little lazy, but hey it's been working!

Nothing much has happened this week. We did feel a tiny Earthquake one day in the morning, all though it wasn't very impressive. The members have told us that there are a lot of earthquakes around this time, so maybe we can be impressed with a bigger one in the next weeks! haha jk!

Well even though I know nothing about football right now, I would like to watch (in a year) Denver vs. Seattle and sorry Landon, but I pick Seattle to win! Those Aggie Seahawks need the ring haha! Well enough of the things of the world, and back to work for me. I hope you guys have a great week! Les Amo.

Hola Familia!!!

Happy New Years from Guatemala! It sounds like you guys had a great New Years. And even though our New Years was at 9:30 it was still super fun! We went over to the bishop's house and had dinner, and then after we watched them light off fireworks.

This week we worked our behinds off!!! After using my watch to count my steps, I averaged 20,000 steps a day, walking about 10 miles a day, and burning about 1000 calories walking! I'd like to see you guys try to beat that haha!!! No, but we really did have a lot of success this week. We found 7 new investigators and taught around 30 lessons which is A LOT! It was super cool.

There was this really neat family, whose mom had been praying to find a church where her and her kids would fit in. Her son who is 15 had been going to her evengelico church and he was wondering, is this really the true church.. haha!!! It was really cool to teach them because our church, in my opinion is the STRONGEST FAMILY CENTERED CHURCH! So we have been teaching them a lot about the plan of salvation and families and temples, and her son really liked the fact that Joseph Smith was 14 years old when he started to wonder about churches. Turns out that their family even went on the Quetzaltenango temple tour, and one of their really good friends is a member in our ward, so we will be working a lot with them!

Another really great investigator who is progressing is named Allerim! We found her as we were working a little bit with her father. When we had found her she had been reading the Book of Mormon, and had a lot of questions, which we were happy to answer! She has been really exercising her faith and she even quit drinking coffee which was her addiction. She couldn't come to church last week because her child was very sick, but we gave him a blessing and the next day he was better.

All of you guys should help us by praying for these investigators! Well that's pretty much all that happened this week. I'm dead tired from all the work haha! But I definitly love this work, and I can't believe that next week I will have 6 months on the mish! I hope you guys have a great week! Les Amo.
